  1. Atelectasis (at-uh-LEK-tuh-sis) is a complete or partial collapse of the entire lung or area (lobe) of the lung. It occurs when the tiny air sacs (alveoli) within the lung become deflated or possibly filled with alveolar fluid. 

Body systems affected: Respiratory system/circulatory system 

Justification: When the alveoli are deflated/filled with fluid it will be harder for gas to exchange between the respiratory system and the circulatory system. Oxygen will be unable to enter into the bloodstream (the capillaries) and carbon dioxide will be unable to leave the capillaries and enter into the alveoli. As a result, the blood will remain toxic.

  1. Glomerulosclerosis describes the scarring or hardening of the tiny blood vessels within the kidney. 

Body systems affected: Excretory System/Circulatory system


Justification: The kidney’s purpose is to filter the blood. If the blood vessels within the kidney are scarred and hardened, it will be harder for the blood to get from the capillaries, into the nephrons to be filtered. As a result, the blood will not be cleaned and will become toxic.

  1. Jejunoileitis is a type of Crohn's disease that causes areas of inflammation in the jejunum, which is the middle part of your small intestine. It is in this part that the villi exists.  



Body systems affected:Digestive System/Circulatory System 



Justification: Within the small intestine, materials are absorbed into the bloodstream. If the villi are inflamed it will be harder for nutrients to move from the small intestine and into the bloodstream. This will prevent necessary nutrients such as glucose from being transported to cells.
