Key Words:

Organelles, Chloroplast, Vacuole, Mitochondrion, Nucleus, Cell Wall, Cell Membrane.

Starter

Many organisms, including humans, start life as a single celled
organism. A fertilised egg which divides to form an embryo.

7

Red blood cells: small cells packed with haemoglobin which
carries oxygen. No nucleus or mitochondria.

White blood cells: Fight infections. All have a nucleus, cell
membrane, cytoplasm and mitochondria.

Sensory Neurone: Long fibres carry signals from receptors to brain
and spinal cord.

Motor neurone: Long fibres carrying signals from brain or spinal cord
to muscles. Power movement.

Multiple Choice

What is the job of the sensory neuron?

1
To process motor commands from the brain.
2
To store memories and experiences.
3
To regulate body temperature.
4
The job of the sensory neuron is to transmit sensory information to the central nervous system.

10

Multiple Choice

What is the role of a motor neuron?

1
To transmit signals from muscles to the central nervous system.
2
To process sensory information from the environment.
3
To regulate blood flow in the circulatory system.
4

Send signals to the muscles, allowing us to move.

11

Plant Cells

Xylem: To carry water. No cytoplasm or organelles.

Phloem: Carries dissolved sugars from leaves to rest of plant.

Guard cells: in epidermis of leaf to allow CO2 to enter for
photosynthesis.

14

Tissues.

A group of similar, specialised cells that work together to carry
out a particular function in the body.
Epithelial tissue: Skin, linings of heart, blood vessels etc. Skin has
tiny hairs called cilia.
Connective tissue: Bone and blood. Blood is for transport and
defence.
Muscle: Contracts to create movement of limbs, gut, heart etc.
