Unit 4: Earth Systems/Resources
Topics Covered:
Plate tectonics and soil formation
Weather and climate patterns
Watersheds and freshwater resources
12
Interactive Activity: "Environmental Puzzle Hunt"
Time: 15 minutes
Objective: Reinforce key concepts related to watersheds, climate patterns, and soil profiles through a fun and competitive puzzle-based challenge.
Group Size: 3-5 students per team
13
Interactive Activity: "Environmental Puzzle Hunt"
Materials: You and your group/partner will have a set of puzzles and a video option sheet with QR codes :)
Rules: Teams must solve a sequence of environmental puzzles correctly. Each correct answer unlocks the next challenge. The first team to complete all the puzzles wins.
Scoring: Each puzzle is worth points. The team with the most points (or the fastest completion) wins a small reward (stickers, extra credit, etc.).

Multiple Choice
Which of the following best explains how plate tectonics influence soil formation?
Erosion caused by tectonic activity destroys existing soil.
Tectonic uplift exposes new rock to weathering, which contributes to soil formation.
Soil formation is not influenced by tectonic activity.
Subduction of oceanic plates directly forms soil.
16
Multiple Choice
A soil sample is found to have high permeability but low water-holding capacity. Which of the following is most likely true of this soil type?
It is primarily composed of sand.
It contains a large amount of clay.
It is rich in organic matter.
It has undergone salinization
17
Multiple Choice
Which of the following best explains why coastal areas tend to have more moderate climates than inland regions?
Coastal areas receive more direct sunlight than inland regions.
Ocean water heats and cools more slowly than land, regulating temperature.
Coastal regions experience more tectonic activity.
Air pressure is higher near the coast than inland.
18
Multiple Choice
Which of the following human activities is most likely to increase sedimentation in a watershed?
Planting cover crops in agricultural fields.
Building wetlands along waterways.
Establishing riparian buffers around streams.
Logging trees along riverbanks.

Unit 5: Land and Water Use
Topics Covered:
Agricultural practices (GMOs, irrigation, monoculture vs. polyculture)
Forestry, overfishing, and rangeland management
Urban land use and ecological footprints

22
"Sustainability Showdown" Activity
Overview:
Teams take turns selecting categories and point values, answering questions related to sustainability topics.
Points are awarded for correct answers, and the team with the highest score at the end wins!

Unit 6: Energy Resources
Topics Covered:
Renewable vs. nonrenewable energy resources
Fossil fuels and their environmental impacts
Energy efficiency and conservation strategies
26
Activity: "Power Grid Crisis Simulation"
Your city is facing an energy crisis! The local power grid is failing, and your team has been hired as energy consultants to design a sustainable and reliable energy plan. You must decide which energy sources to invest in while managing costs, environmental impacts, and reliability.
27
Step 1 Task: (10min)
Each team must design an energy portfolio for their city using a mix of sources. They must consider:
✅ Reliability (Can it provide 24/7 energy?)
✅ Environmental Impact (Does it contribute to pollution or climate change?)
✅ Cost (Is it affordable for the city?)
✅ Sustainability (Will it last long-term?)
28
Step 2 ENERGY CRISIS: (10min)
Disaster Strikes! Each team draws a random crisis card that challenges their energy choices...
📌 Task: Teams must adjust their energy portfolio in response to the crisis while balancing reliability, cost, and sustainability.
29
Step 3 City Council Pitch & Wrap-Up: (10min)
Final Task: Each team presents their energy plan to the "City Council" (rest of the class).
Why did they choose their energy sources?
How did they handle the crisis?
Did they achieve a sustainable and reliable grid?
🏆 Winning Criteria:
Most balanced and resilient energy plan
Best response to crises
Most creative solutions
30
