Grade 7: Climate change
Understanding Climate Change: Causes, Effects, and Solutions
Definition of Climate Change
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in global weather patterns and average
temperatures. These changes affect our planet's climate systems and have significant
impacts on life on Earth.
The Greenhouse Effect and Greenhouse Gases
The greenhouse effect is a natural process where certain gases in Earth's atmosphere
trap heat from the sun, keeping our planet warm enough for life. However, human
activities have increased the concentration of greenhouse gases, leading to excessive
warming. The main greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄),
nitrous oxide (N₂O), and water vapor.
Causes of Climate Change
1. Burning fossil fuels for energy and transportation
2. Deforestation and land clearing
3. Industrial processes and manufacturing
4. Agricultural practices, including livestock farming
5. Waste management and landfills
6. Use of chemical fertilizers
Negative Effects of Climate Change
On People:
•Increased frequency of extreme weather events
•Food and water scarcity
•Spread of diseases
•Displacement of communities due to rising sea levels
On Animals:
•Habitat loss and destruction
•Species extinction
•Migration pattern changes
•Ocean acidification affecting marine life

On Environment:
•Rising sea levels
•Melting glaciers and ice caps
•More frequent wildfires
•Extreme weather patterns
Solutions to Climate Change
Individual Level:
•Reduce energy consumption
•Use public transportation or electric vehicles
•Adopt plant-based diets
•Practice recycling and composting
Community Level:
•Implement local recycling programs
•Create community gardens
•Support renewable energy initiatives
•Organize environmental education programs
Government and Climate Activist Level:
•Implement carbon pricing
•Invest in renewable energy infrastructure
•Protect forests and natural habitats
•Create strict environmental regulations
•Support international climate agreements
•Fund climate research and innovation
