What are MNEMONICS?

Mnemonic Device:

A technique that consolidates a lot of information into a code in order to stimulate your memory of the information.

Using mnemonic devices is a great study skills for high school, college, and career readiness!

The Acronym

Uses a combination of letters

Each letter is a cue to an idea you need to remember.
Examples:
The SQ3R Strategy stands for : Survey, Question, Read, Recite , Reflect.

The Acrostic

An acrostic is a sentence where the first letter of each word is a cue to an idea.

Example: Rabid Skunks Prefer Green Apples.
The beginning letters of each word: R-S-P-G-A stands for the First Amendment Rights: Religion, Speech, Press, Grievance, Assembly.

This type of mnemonic helps you recall facts about a person, place, thing or concept by inventing an assocation between the name and characteristic. (WORD ASSOCIATION)

For example: Alexander Hamilton was the 1st Secretary of US Treasury.
(Think: You can buy a HAM with money. US Treasury handles money).

Spelling & Word Usage Mnemonics

When you come across a word that you have difficulty spelling, focus on the leter or combination of letters causing the confusion and create an assocation.
For example: permenent vs. permanent. The correct word is permanent (think "man" in the middle).
