Conversions

Scientific notation is a way to simplify very small or very large numbers. However, sometimes you need to work with a number in standard, or decimal, notation. You can convert scientific notation to standard notation. The exponent at the end of scientific notation gives you the information you need to convert the number to standard notation.

The exponent in scientific notation tells you how many places to move the decimal point. The direction you move the decimal depends on whether the exponent is positive or negative.

  • Move the decimal to the right for a positive exponent.

  • Move the decimal to the left for a negative exponent.
