Jimmy Carter

  • Jimmy Carter was the first (and only!) Georgian to be elected president

  • After serving in the U.S. Navy and managing his family's peanut farm, he began his political career in 1962 when he ran for the Georgia State Senate

    • he ran against Homer Moore

    • there was widespread fraud, and at first it was thought that Moore had one

    • Carter challenged the election results, fraudulent votes were found, and Carter won!

    • he served 2 terms in the Senate from 1962 to 1966

Jimmy Carter

  • Jimmy Carter was elected governor in 1970

  • In his inaugral address, he informed Georgians that it was time for segregation to end & he intended to end racial tensions in GA

    • He faced a lot of obstacles from segregationists in GA's government

  • He was popular and very successful as governor as he:

    • oversaw a massive reorganization of state government

    • reformed the educational & criminal justice systems

    • promoted civil rights

  • He also appointed more women & people from diverse backgrounds to government positions than all of GA's other governor combined

Jimmy Carter

  • Jimmy Carter was elected president in 1976, after he defeated Republican President Gerald Ford

  • During his presidency, he:

    • opened diplomatic relations with China

    • established human rights as something very important in U.S. foreign policy

    • helped negotiate a peace agreement between Israel & Egypt

  • Issues faced during his presidency:

    • stagflation - high inflation rates, slow economic growth & high unemployment

    • 1970s Energy Crisis - the U.S. supported Israel during the Arab-Israeli War of 1973, which led to many Middle Eastern oil-producing countries refusing to sell oil to the U.S. & a shortage of gas

    • Iranian Hostage Crisis - for 444 days more than 50 U.S. diplomats & citizens were held hostage over the U.S. presence in Iran & Carter tried to rescue them but failed

Jimmy Carter

  • After his presidency, he continued to promote democracy and human rights around the world

    • created the Carter Center, which has monitored elections in more than 35 countries & fought disease and starvation around the world

    • won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, which is given every year to the person whose work has most benefited humankind

Maynard Jackson

  • Atlanta’s 1973 mayoral election was the first election in Atlanta with a majority African American and Black population.

  • In the previous election, mayor Sam Massell had won 90 percent of the African American and Black vote and had been popular with the city’s African American and Black leadership.

    • However, Massell lost their support while in office after he encouraged them to "think white."

  • Jackson, who was African American, challenged Massell and won the election with 59 percent of the total vote.

  • Jackson became the first African American mayor of a major Southern city.

Maynard Jackson

  • Maynard Jackson served two terms in the 1970s and then returned for a third term from 1990 to 1994.

  • While in office, Jackson expanded Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport.

  • He also worked to improve business and social life for African Americans in Atlanta.

    • He made sure African American and Black businesses got a larger share of government contracts than they had in the past and helped add more African Americans and Black officers to the city’s police force.

  • In his last term, he helped bring the 1996 Olympic Games to Atlanta. His focus on Atlanta's development contributed to the growth of the state.

In 2003, Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport was renamed “Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.” Maynard Jackson’s name was added to recognize his contributions to the airport’s expansion.

Andrew Young

  • Andrew Young has served Georgia as a civil rights activist, politician, and businessman.

  • In the 1950s and 1960s, Young helped organize voter registration and desegregation efforts in Albany and other Southern cities.

  • He also worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. in the SCLC.

  • In 1972, Andrew Young became a U.S. congressman and the first African American to be elected to that post from Georgia since Reconstruction.

  • The voter registration drives he helped organize in his youth were an important factor in the success of Young and many other African Americans and Black political candidates.

  • President Jimmy Carter named Young ambassador to the United Nations in 1977.

Andrew Young

  • In 1981, he was elected mayor of Atlanta, succeeding Maynard Jackson.

  • As mayor, he continued Jackson’s focus on Atlanta’s growth for his two terms in office, which contributed to the state’s economy.

    • He strove to develop Atlanta as an international city

    • He continued the development of Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport

    • He brought the 1988 Democratic Convention to Atlanta

  • During and after his time in office, he worked hard to bring the 1996 Summer Olympics to Atlanta, serving as co-chair of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games.

  • Young’s public service throughout his career has brought international recognition to Atlanta and the entire state of Georgia.

  • He continues to make an impact on the state through the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University.

The Olympic Games

  • In 1987, Billy Payne, an attorney in Atlanta, imagined what something as huge as the Olympic Games could do to Georgia’s image.

  • After proposing his idea to Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, the two began to put together a bid to host the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.

  • By September 1990, the International Olympic Committee had been presented with six bids, including Atlanta’s, for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.

    • The five other major countries were Greece, Yugoslavia, Great Britain, Australia, and Canada.

    • After much deliberation, the committee chose Atlanta to host the 1996 Olympic Games!

    • Atlanta was also chosen for its connection with Martin Luther King, Jr. & the Civil Rights Movement.

  • In 1996, Atlanta hosted the Centennial Summer Olympic Games.

    • The effect of this event was enormous, bringing recognition, respect, and investment to Georgia from all over the world.

The Olympic Impact

  • After winning the bid for the Olympic Games, the organizers had to quickly make plans for the millions of people coming to Atlanta for the games.

  • Hosting the Olympic Games costs a lot of money.

    • The Atlanta Olympic Committee spent around $1 billion to prepare for and host the games.

    • While the Atlanta Olympics made history as the first one to be privately financed, the government still provided an estimated amount of a little over $600 million for such items as infrastructure improvements and security.

Short-Term Impacts

  • Preparation for the games required a lot of work, and there were many short-term impacts on the city and state’s economy, including Atlanta & neraby cities gaining:

    • more than 60,000 new hotel rooms

    • new restaurant chaines

    • highway improvements

    • mass transit updates

    • new sports facilities built

    • new sidewalks, lighting, public art & trees in downtown Atlanta

    • Centennial Olympic Park provided a 21-acre meeting space

    • dormitories built for athletes

  • All these accommodations allowed the city to handle millions of people coming into Atlanta, and those visitors also made a significant impact on Atlanta’s economy.

Long-Term Impacts

  • The Olympics also had long-term impacts on the state economy. The estimated impact of the Olympic Games on the city of Atlanta was more than $5 billion!

  • Long-term impacts include:

    • infrastructure - improvements made Atlanta more attractive to buisnesses & people after the games

    • sports venues - continued to be used for sports teams here in GA

    • hotes & restaurants - helped to attract tourists, sports events & business conventions

    • Centennial Olympic Park - became a valued greenspace in Atlanta & development sprang up around it

    • univeristy dormitories - local universities began to use dormitories for their students

  • New businesses opened in Atlanta either directly because of the Olympics or indirectly as result of the attention Atlanta received during the Games. They took advantage of the new infrastructure the Games had brought. The Games also contributed to population growth as people came to work in these new businesses or were drawn to the growing city for other reasons.
