Differences in the Accounts?

5

The Timing of the Last Supper & Crucifixion Relative to Passover

  • Synoptics (Matthew 26:17–19, Mark 14:12–16, Luke 22:7–15): The Last Supper is a Passover meal, meaning Jesus is crucified the next day (Passover day).

  • John (John 19:14, 31): Jesus is crucified before the Passover meal, when the Passover lambs were being slaughtered.

  • Possible Explanation: John may be making a theological point that Jesus is the true Paschal Lamb, sacrificed at the same time as the lambs in the Temple. The Synoptics may be using the Jewish reckoning of days from sundown to sundown, while John uses the Roman system (midnight to midnight).

6

Luke may be summarizing the trial or referring only to the official daylight ruling, while Matthew and Mark include both the night hearing and morning confirmation.

Possible explanation

  • Matthew 26:57–68 & Mark 14:53–65: Trial at night, Jesus formally condemned in the morning.

  • Luke 22:66–71: The trial only in the morning.

  • John 18:12–24: Jesus taken to Annas, then Caiaphas, but no details of trial before the Sanhedrin.

Conclusion: Do These Differences Contradict?

No, these differences do not amount to contradictions. Rather, they show that:

  1. The Gospels are not purely chronological biographies but theological narratives with different emphases. This is common in ancient biographies.

  2. Different eyewitness accounts recall different details—just like in any historical testimony.

  3. Some accounts organize events thematically rather than strictly chronologically.
