What is a SOLUTION: a homogenous mixture in which the substances are evenly mixed.

  • Solute: the substance being dissolved

  • Solvent: the substance doing the dissolving

It is important to remember that solubility of a solid is related to temperature.

  • Higher temperature = increase in solubility

  • Lower temperature = decrease in solubility

6

Temperature and solubility curves

As the temperature of a solution changes, the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved will also change.

Solubility curves are used as a reference tool. They tell you how much solute will dissolve in a solvent at a certain temperature. They also allow you to see how solubility changes with temperature.
