Organize the given reactants into single replacement and other reactions.

But not all single replacement reactions occur.
We use an activity series to determine of a single replacement reaction will occur.
One for metals (which includes hydrogen).
One for nonmetals (which is basically the halides on the periodic table).
Watch the video to see how it works.

Multiple Choice
Let's try again. Do you understand how the activity series works?
A piece of magnesium ribbon is placed in a beaker containing an aqueous solution of copper(II) sulfate. Will a reaction take place?
A reaction will take place, because the copper(II) sulfate is an aqueous solution.
A reaction will take place because magnesium is more reactive than copper.
A reaction will NOT take place because magnesium is less reactive than copper.
A reaction will NOT occur because the aqueous solution needs to be heated.

Multiple Choice
Let's take a moment and see if you understood what the video has shown so far.
A solid piece of copper is placed into a beaker containing hydrochloric acid. Will a reaction take place?
A reaction will take place, because everything reacts with acids.
A reaction will take place because copper is more reactive than hydrogen.
A reaction will NOT take place because copper is less reactive than hydrogen.
A reaction will NOT occur because copper is much stronger than acids.

Although we have primarily been looking at metals replacing metals, single replacement reactions also occur between nonmetals.
The nonmetal reactions you will be responsible will mostly deal with the halogens.
Look at the periodic table and determine how to use it as an activity series for the nonmetals.
