Mother said, “Well, it will be hard. But we just won’t buy lots of things. We’ll get by. You’ll get a new job soon.”

27

Hard Times

“Sure,” Scott said. “I’ll help with the garden. We can grow some of our food.” He gave his father a hug.

Each day, Scott’s father looked for work. He didn’t have much luck.

28

Hard Times

Then he and Scott started to play ball. They talked about good times.

“You make me feel good, Scott,” father said.

One day, father said, “The pet store has a job. But the pay isn’t good.”
