By the end of the lesson:
You will be able to describe how IoT devices work and identify at least three real-world applications of IoT.
3
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a network of physical objects (“things”) that are embedded with sensors, software, and connectivity to exchange data over the internet. These objects can be smart devices, home appliances, wearables, vehicles, or even industrial machines that collect and share data to automate processes and improve efficiency.
Key Features of IoT:
✔ Connectivity: Devices communicate via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or mobile networks.
✔ Automation: IoT devices reduce human effort by automating tasks.
✔ Data Exchange: Sensors collect real-time data and send it to cloud servers for analysis.
✔ Smart Control: Devices can be monitored and controlled remotely through apps.
What is IOT?
4
Step-by-Step Process of IoT Functionality:
1️⃣ Sensors Collect Data
IoT devices have built-in sensors that track temperature, motion, pressure, etc.
Example: A smartwatch collects heart rate data.
2️⃣ Devices Connect to the Internet
IoT devices use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular networks to send data.
Example: A smart fridge sends alerts when food is running low.
3️⃣ Data is Sent to the Cloud
Information from sensors is uploaded to cloud servers for processing.
Example: A smart thermostat sends room temperature data to a cloud-based control system.
4️⃣ Data is Processed & Analyzed
AI and machine learning algorithms analyze the data to detect patterns.
Example: A fitness tracker analyzes step count and heart rate trends.
5️⃣ Action is Taken Based on Insights
Users receive alerts or devices adjust automatically.
Example: A smart irrigation system waters plants automatically when soil moisture is low.
