Speak Up: Oral Planned Response (Suggested Answers)
How does the activity shown in the video help foreign students assimilate into the lifestyle of
the people in the host country?
I first see the foreign students at a local eatery. In fact, they are eating at a hawker centre, which is
one of Singapore’s iconinc places. They look amazed and are in wonderment that they see such a
variety of food at one place. I feel that when they eat local food, foreign will get to know more about the types of food that the people of the host country eat and how they are usually prepared and eaten, reveal much about the people’s lifestyles and culture. When they understand the
lifestyles and culture of the people of a particular country, it is easier to get along with the
hosts.
OWN EXAMPLE + LINK When I visited Taiwan last year, the night markets left an indelible
impression on me. They were often packed with food lovers attracted by the endless buffet of
exotic street food - grilled squid, oyster omelette, stinky tofu, scallion pancakes, peanut ice
cream roll and more. Walking and snacking as one pushed through the chaotic throngs of people,
allowed a foreigner like me to soak in the resourcefulness of the locals and their love for food
as they seek to prepare and present their food in the most creative ways to attract their customers.
Another example would be my Italian neighbours. Being frequently invited to share their home-
made pasta, focaccia and pizza helps me understand the pride they place in food preparation
and the importance they place in the sharing of food and gatherings.

How does the activity shown in the video help foreign students assimilate into the lifestyle of
the people in the host country?
Reason 2: This leads me to my next point that food plays a significant role in social
interactions and rituals.
Example + Link : As a Singaporean, I am raised in a multi-cultural society where Chinese,
Malay, and Indian food are sold at a food court or hawker centre. These places are common
spaces where different races dine together, fostering social interactions. Having some
knowledge of the food from different cultures and being able to enjoy the cuisines from different races
can help people of different racial backgrounds to come together for meals and even celebrate
key festivals and Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali together. Similarly, if the
foreigners get acquainted with the different types of food as shown in the videos, it will be easier for
them to be involved in the celebrations and social gatherings of the people in the host
country.

Speak Up: Oral Spoken Interaction (Suggested Answers)
1.How can young people contribute to building an inclusive society? PEEL
Young people can be advocates for the vulnerable. Reading widely for example about stories of
what other young people or social enterprises are doing to help build an inclusive society can
inspire them to do more. Being digital natives, young people can share news and inspiring stories
on their social media platforms. For example, they can advocate about the plight of foreign
workers and elderly or share about their positive dining experiences at places that employ people with
disabilities and special needs or ex-convicts and troubled youths. In Singapore, a few restaurants like
Dignity Kitchen, Professor Brawn and Eighteen Chefs are supported by an inclusive workforce. By
being a voice to the voiceless, young people can contribute significantly to building an inclusive
society.
To add, young people can offer their time and skills by volunteering at local organisations or even
overseas projects that provide education and training to vulnerable groups like the poor, women
and children. For example, I know of a friend’s mother who teaches English online to the
Palestinian refugees so that they have better opportunities to secure a job in their host countries.
In this way, she gets to know more about them and their needs. That is why it is important that,
young people do much more with their skills and talents to build a more inclusive society.

2. Some people say that t he rapid advancements in technology have encouraged young people
to participate more actively in social events. What are your views? PEEL
Technology has certainly encouraged young people to be more involved in social events as it has
allowed information to be disseminated swiftly and widely. During Covid-19, many young
Singaporeans became an active voice for vulnerable groups of people as inspiring stories about
the plight of the underprivileged ones in our society were shared on the internet and social media
platforms. Thus, technological innovations like instant messaging apps, smartphones and video
conferencing allow young people to connect easily and conveniently, encouraging young people to
collaborate and organise social events such as the distribution of food, masks and sanitisers to
elderly and foreign workers.

2. Some people say that t he rapid advancements in technology have encouraged young people
to participate more actively in social events. What are your views? PEEL
Moreover, technology also brings like-minded groups together. Social media platforms like Discord
allow young people who share similar interests to network and organise social activities. TikTok videos,
hashtag movements like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter as well as podcasts are different mediums
through which young people can be mobilised, either offline or online, to advocate for a particular cause.
Notably, Black Lives Matter was actually a youth-led movement that gathered momentum through digital
means and eventually grew to become large-scale protests worldwide. When Greta Thunberg posted a
photograph of herself protesting outside Sweden’s parliament building on Twitter and Instagram,
other social media accounts immediately amplified her cause and that helped to garner more
attention and support from young people. That is how young people around the world were
encouraged to organise similar protests around the world and be more informed about saving the
environment.
