Where Did Ballet Come From?

Ballet is a unique form of dance that brings together grace, storytelling, and emotion. Over the centuries, it has evolved into various styles, each with its own characteristics and themes. Understanding the different types of ballet helps us appreciate its rich history and cultural significance.

Ballet's origins can be traced back to ancient rituals where rhythmic movements were used in ceremonies. These early dances were often part of religious rites in many cultures around the world. As societies evolved, so did dance. The Greek culture played a pivotal role in transforming dance from a purely religious expression to a form of storytelling. They introduced elements such as masks, fables, comedy, and acrobatics, allowing ballet to convey narratives and emotions rather than just spiritual themes. When ballet began, only men were allowed to dance. In 1681, that changed, and women were allowed to dance also. The first documented ballet is Le Ballet Comique de le Reine in 1581, about the Greek Goddess, Circe.

Moving On...

Part 1

King Louis XIV (The Sun King)

King Louis XIV was the King of France. He enjoyed dancing very much and created the Academe Royale de Danse. In 1699, he opened an opera house where ballets were performed. He choreographed and stared in ballets as well.

Part B

Ballet Technique

Although there was no codified dance technique, The Sun King codified the language. He is the reason why all ballet terminology is in French. Dancers during the Romantic Era created their movements based on paintings. The poses in the paintings inspired some of the positions we see. During the Classical Era, technique became more formalized. Although dancers were taking classes during the Romantic Era, it was the Classical Era that gave ballet technique its structure. There are three prominent ballet techniques that inspire all others. They are the French Technique, The Cecchetti Technique (Italian Technique), and the Vaganova Technique (Russian Technique). All three of these are taught in schools around the world.

Tutus and Skirts

When women were allowed to dance, it was during the Romantic Era of ballet, which were love stories that had mystical creatures such as fairies and enchanted animals. Because women were allowed to dance, they wore a long tutu, which we call the Romantic Tutu. It flowed all the way down, just above the ankle, so an audience could see the dancer’s feet.

During the Classical Era of ballet, the skirt was shortened to above the knee, so audiences could see more of the dancer’s legs and the movements they were making. It can look like a bell, or flat like a serving dish. We call the flat one a platter tutu.

During the 20th Century, ballet tutus were shortened again, and were light weight.!

The Ballet Slipper v. The Pointe Shoe

The pointe shoe is a crucial element in the world of ballet, allowing dancers to perform on the tips of their toes, creating an ethereal appearance. The history of the pointe shoe dates back to the early 18th century when ballet began to evolve as a formal art. Initially, dancers wore soft slippers, but as the art form progressed, so did the need for footwear that could support more advanced techniques. By the late 19th century, the design of the pointe shoe changed significantly thanks to innovators like Marie Taglioni, who is credited with popularizing the use of the shoe in her performances. Pointe shoes are crafted from layers of fabric, cardboard, and glue, which create a stiff box at the toe. This enables dancers to balance on their toes while maintaining grace. Today, pointe shoes come in various styles and sizes, tailored to fit each dancer's foot perfectly, allowing for both beauty and functionality on stage.
