Sentence Types

A sentence that has two or more independent clauses joined together. The clauses are connected using a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) and a comma.

I wanted to go to the park, but it started raining.
She loves to read, and she writes stories too.

Compound Sentence

A sentence that has one independent clause. That means it has a subject and a predicate, and it expresses a complete thought.

She runs every morning.
My brother and I play basketball.

Simple Sentence

Sentence Types

A sentence that has two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. It combines features of both compound and complex sentences.

Because I studied, I did well on the test, and I felt proud.
She stayed late at school, but she didn't mind because she had to finish her project.

Compound-Complex Sentence

A sentence that has one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. The dependent clause is connected to the independent clause with a subordinating conjunction (AWUBIS).

Because it was raining, we stayed inside.
I was nervous when I gave my speech.

Punctuating and Capitalizing Quotes

  1. Put quotation marks around the quotes.

    1. The author writes, "The Washington Commanders had their best season in thirty years."

  2. Capitalize the first word of the quote.

    1. According to the article, "Fans of the Commanders were overjoyed with their success."

  3. Put a comma before the quote.

    1. The author predicts, "Jayden Daniels will be the MVP next season."

  4. An end mark shows where a sentence ends. Put end marks inside the quotation marks.

    1. The author argues, "The Commanders will get their revenge on the Eagles."
