Adding Fractions

Steps:

1. Make sure the bottom numbers (denomenators) are the same.
2. Add the top numbers (numerators) and put the answer over the denomenator.
3. Simplify

Example 1:

 $\frac{1}{4}+\frac{2}{4}$  

Example 2:

 $\frac{1}{3}+\frac{1}{6}$  

Example 3:

 $\frac{1}{5\ }+\ -\frac{1}{3}$  

Subtracting Fractions

Steps:

1. Make sure the denomenators are the same.
2. Subtract the numerators and keep the denomenator in your answer.
3. Simplify.

Example 1:

 $\frac{3}{5}-\ \frac{2}{5}$  

Example 2:

 $\frac{7}{9}-\frac{2}{3}$  

Example 3:

 $-\frac{4}{6}-\frac{3}{8}$
