The Iliad was a story about a ten-year war that destroyed the city of Troy.

Odysseus was the soldier who came up with the Trojan Horse!
After the war, the Spartans felt victorious and full of arrogance. Because the Gods were angered by his bragging, they decided to punish him; his journey home was twice as long and difficult.

Characteristics of an Epic
Physically strong hero of a national or historical importance
A vast setting that covers a large portion of the world
The hero will search for something of value (gold, love, weapons)
Supernatural forces will aid or fight the hero
The hero will be glorified in the end
