when we convert units, we are taking one unit and making an equivalent value into another unit.
Example: m into kilometers, or lbs into tons

When Converting units we follow this rule
BIG --- small = MULTIPLY
3 yd-- ft? we 3 x 3 = 9ft because 1 yd=3ft so 3 yd x 3ft each = 9ft
small---BIG = DIVIDE
6 c -- pints ? we are doing small units to big
6c /2 because 1pint=2cups so if I have 6c/2 = 3 pints
