This included landforms like mountains, canyons, and deltas.

This week, we'll be learning about underwater landforms.

In the last couple of weeks, you all learned about continental landforms.

Underwater/Oceanic Landforms

Just like the name says, all of these landforms can be found underwater.

What's great about many of them is that they have a continental landform that they look just like. So you'll be able to connect some of the likely unknown names to names that you do know.

If this were a continental landform, we would call it a mountain range.

But since it's underwater, we call it a mid-ocean ridge.

4

Multiple Choice

What do we call an underwater mountain range?

1

A volcano

2

A mid-ocean ridge

3

A trench

5

If this were a continental landform, we would call it a canyon.

But since it's an underwater landform, we call it a trench.

6

Multiple Choice

What do we call an underwater canyon?

1

A mid-ocean ridge

2

A seamount

3

A trench

7

Rift zones are cracks in underwater mid-ocean ridges.

Similar to a trench, but not as deep.

8

Multiple Choice

What is a small trench-like landform that is found in mid-ocean ridges?

1

A valley

2

An abyssal plain

3

A rift zone

9

media

If this were a continental landform, we would call it a plain.

But since it's an underwater landform, we call it an abyssal plain.

Abyssal Plain

10

Multiple Choice

What do we call an underwater plain?

1

An abyssal plain

2

A mid-ocean range

3

We don't call it...it's busy and isn't taking calls right now

Seamounts can be pointed at the top.

Or they can be flatter on the top.

If seamounts were a continental landform, we would call them mountains or volcanoes.

But since it's an underwater landform, we call them seamounts.

They can be active or inactive volcanoes, but are usually inactive.

12

Multiple Choice

What do we call an underwater mountain or volcano?

1

A mid-ocean ridge

2

An abyssal plain

3

A seamount

13

Multiple Choice

Are seamounts pointed on top or rounded on top?

1

Pointed

2

Rounded

3

Both

15

Multiple Choice

What do we call a large area covered by ocean water?

1

An ocean basin

2

An abyssal plain

3

A trench

Continental Shelf - Shallow area before dropping into deeper ocean

Continental Slope - Dropping into the deep ocean

Continental Rise - Mud/sand sediment between slope and plain
