What are elements and compounds?

A pure substance is matter that has
the same properties throughout.
An element is a substance that
contains only one type of atom. It
cannot be broken down into other
substances.
A compound is a substance made
of two or more different elements
that are bonded together.

A mixture is two or more
substances combined physically.
A mixture is homogeneous if it
looks the same throughout, but it
is heterogeneous if you can see
the individual substances that
make up the mixture.
