Who were the 5 “civilized” tribes and how was the Indian Removal Act going to affect them?

• Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminoles

• Where they lived- They lived in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida.

• Indian Removal Act: The government President Jackson told the Native Americans they needed to relocate or move out of their land.

What was the background of the Worcester v Georgia Supreme Court case?

• Worcester v. Georgia involved a group of white Christian missionaries, including Samuel A. Worcester, who were living in Cherokee territory in Georgia.

• In addition to their missionary work, the men were advising the Cherokee about resisting Georgia’s attempts to impose state laws on the Cherokee Nation (a self-governing nation whose independence and right to its land would be guaranteed).

• Worcester argued that Georgia had no right to extend its laws to Cherokee territory.

• The migrants(Natives) faced hunger, disease, and exhaustion on the forced march.

• Many Natives were treated brutally. Over 4,000 out of 15,000 of the Cherokees died in Alabama and on their westward journey.

• U.S. Congress forced Native American off their land, so the settlers could get more land to grow more crops.

How did President Jackson respond to the Supreme Court’s ruling? Why?

• President Jackson ignored the court's decision in Worcester v. Georgia.

• But later issued a rule of the Supreme Court's ultimate power to decide constitutional questions and emphasizing that its decisions had to be obeyed.

What the Seminole Wars were (who was involved, why they started, major facts, outcomes, etc)

• Seminole Wars, 1817–18, 1835–42, 1855–58, three conflicts between the United States and the Seminoles Indians of Florida in the period before the American Civil War.

• The First Seminole War began over attempts by U.S. authorities to recapture runaway black slaves living among Seminoles bands.

• The U.S. government were involved because they were against American Indians.

• The Second Seminole War (1835-1842), usually referred to as the Seminole War, was the fiercest war.
