What is a summary?

briefly (shortly, quickly) retelling main ideas and key events in YOUR own words

includes the most important events or details

should be shorter than the text

ex: a book summary might be a few paragraphs; a summary of a few paragraphs might be a few sentences

9

When and Why we summarize

  • To tell someone the gist or main idea of a story

  • So someome understands what the text was about

10

A summary should include

Somebody... Who is the main character or characters

What happened? Was there a problem? How would you explain this to a friend?

11

media

12

Summarize: taking ONLY the important parts of the text and writing them in chronological order. You can use SWBST or BME strategy when writing the summary.

media

13

Paraphrase: taking an idea or text and putting it in your OWN words. It is not copying word for word or summarizing; it's simply REWORDING the information.
