Carbohydrates
  • provide quick energy to the body through glucose, a simple sugar

  • larger carbohydrates are made of simple sugars called monosaccharides (like glucose)

  • glucose is broken down for energy and to make new things in the body

  • examples are sugars and starches

  • contain C, H, O

Why do we need to eat?!
  • Digestion breaks food down into useful nutrients, so the body can use those nutrients to make the macromolecules it needs

  • Cells also use these nutrients to perform cellular respiration, which gives the body energy to do work (like walk up all the stairs to biology!)

  • The nutrients move into the bloodstream (absorption) and then can be transported throughout the body
