was
happening?

people pulling the strings.
•The famous Medici Bank was established in 1397, and became the largest
bank in Europe during the Renaissance. This allowed the Medici family to
gain economic and political control over Florence. With their massive
wealth, the Medici became patrons of famous Renaissance artists
including Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo.

The role
of
Catholicism
& the
Protestant
Reformation
•Humanism encouraged Europeans to question the role of the
Roman Catholic church during the Renaissance.
•As more people learned how to read, write and interpret
ideas, they began to closely examine and critique religion as
they knew it. Also, the printing press allowed for texts,
including the Bible, to be easily reproduced and widely read
by the people, themselves, for the first time.
•In the 16th century, Martin Luther, a German monk, led the
Protestant Reformation – a revolutionary movement that
caused a split in the Catholic church. Luther questioned
whether or not certain church practices were consistent with
what the Bible taught.
•As a result, a new form of Christianity, known as
Protestantism, was created.
14
What was the Reformation?
❖ Most of the challenges to the Catholic Church revolved
around the idea that individual believers should be less
dependent on the Catholic Church, and its pope and
priests, for spiritual guidance and salvation.
Instead, Protestants believed people should be independent in
their relationship with God, taking personal responsibility
for their faith and referring directly to the Bible, the
Christian holy book, for spiritual wisdom.
❖ The Reformation reformed fundamental Christian beliefs,
leading to the division of Western Christendom between
Roman Catholicism and the emerging Protestant
traditions.
Martin Luther's 95 Theses was a
controversial document that
challenged the Catholic Church's
role as an intermediary between
people and God. Luther argued
against the indulgence system,
which allowed people to
purchase pardon certificates,
and instead believed salvation
was a gift given by God to those
with faith.
