Properties of matter

All substances have properties that we can use to identify them.

• physical

• chemical

What are Physical Properties of Matter?

• do not change the chemical nature of the matter.

• readily observable

• help understand how the substance will behave under various conditions

Examples of physical properties:

• magnetism

• boiling and freezing and melting point

• malleability (does it mold to shapes?)

• measurable qualities: density, mass, and volume

• viscosity (does it resist flowing?)

• size and shape and color

• texture

Chemical Properties

change the chemical nature of matter and are only seen during a chemical reaction

Examples of Chemical Properties

• combustibility (the energy released when it burns completely)

• reactivity (reacting with other chemicals- may form a precipitate or color change)

• Ph (measure of acidity or alkalinity of a solution)

• flammability (how likely to burn)
