2

Geologic Time Scale Introduction

Target: You will be able to explain how evidence is used to organize Earth's history into divisions of time called the Geologic Time Scale.

media

3

Any environmental change that occurs in minutes to hundreds of years is considered a short-term change

Minutes to 100's of years (not 1000's of years)

4

Describing Geologic Change

You have likely changed a lot since you were born. Just imagine all of the changes the Earth has been through since it formed 4.6 bya!

7

Tectonic plate movement:

• causes continents to move to different parts of Earth.

• causes some organisms to die.

• may lead to new species

Tectonic plate movement is a long-term environmental change.

Tectonic plate movement is a long-term environmental change.

10

Rocks Give Clues About Earth's Past

Major geologic events - such as a super-volcanic eruption, an asteroid impact, or tectonic plate movement - are recorded in the Rock Record.

11

Multiple Choice

Which represents the greatest time frame in which a short-term environmental change can occur?

1

days

2

minutes

3

over hundreds of years

4

over thousands of years

12

Fossils Give Clue About Earth's Past

The fossil record is a compilation of all of Earth's known fossils and the information they provide about Earth's history.

13

Effects of Long-Term Environmental Change Long-term environmental changes can also have lasting effects.

  • • Adaptation —a species attempts to adjust to a new environment.

  • • Some individuals may be better suited to the new environment than others.

  • • Speciation —a new species forms through evolution.

  • • Extinction —a species that cannot adapt will die out.

14

Organizing Earth's History

Scientists have constructed a timeline called the geologic time scale. The GTS is used to organize Earth's long history into manageable parts. The GTS is continually updated as new rock and fossil evidence is discovered.

15

Multiple Choice

Which natural occurrence is an example of a long-term environmental change?

1

Lightning sparks a forest fire.

2

An earthquake results in a tsunami.

3

A river floods due to a strong thunderstorm.

4

The peppered moth evolves from a light to a dark color.

16

Multiple Choice

Question image

As we go further back in the GTS, the less rock and fossil information we have.

1

true

2

false

17

Multiple Choice

Which represents the greatest time frame in which a short-term environmental change can occur?

1

days

2

minutes

3

over hundreds of years

4

over thousands of years

18

The Geologic Time Scale

Earth's history is divided into four major eons which are the longest division of time. Then there are the Eras, periods and epochs.

19

Most of the questions that we deal with in this section are based on cuase and effect.

Be able to give a reason for the questions asked of you.

20

Multiple Choice

Question image

Which is the longest division of time on the GTS?

1

eons

2

eras

3

periods

4

epochs

21

Multiple Choice

Which statement accurately describes tectonic plate movement?

1

Tectonic plate movement can be prevented with planning.

2

Tectonic plate movement does not cause environmental change.

3

Tectonic plate movement does not affect organisms.

4

Tectonic plate movement is a long-term environmental change.

22

Divisions of Geologic Time

The GTS is broken up into eons, eras, periods and epochs. Divisions in the GTS are not equal. This is because the divisions are based on major events and changes in Earth's history, such as an extinction.

23

Multiple Choice

Which statement accurately describes long-term environmental changes?

1

Long-term environmental changes cause changes in genetic makeup.

2

4

Long-term environmental changes immediately affect organisms in the environment.
