Chinese Exclusion Act
-This was the first significant law
restricting immigration into the United
States
-In the Spring of 1882, the Chinese
Exclusion Act was passed by Congress
and signed into law by Chester A. Arthur.
-This Act provided an absolute 10-year
ban on Chinese laborers immigrating to
the United States

The Gentlemen's Agreement
-The Gentlemen’s Agreement was an informal arrangement between
the United States and Japan to ease the growing tensions between
the two countries
-This agreement was regarding immigration
-In this agreement President Theodore Roosevelt forced San
Francisco to repeal its Japanese-American school segregation in
exchange Japan agreed to deny emigration passports to Japanese
laborers.

Immigration Legislation of 1920
-These immigration acts limited the number of immigrants allowed entry into the
United States through a national origins quota
-This act completely excluded immigrants from Asia
-Some of the acts/ laws, implemented a literacy test that required immigrants 16
years to demonstrate basic reading comprehension in any language.
-There was also a tax that had to be paid by the new immigrants upon arrival
