The Republican Party

 Its platform promised not to interfere with slavery in the South but opposed extension of slavery into the territories.

The election of 1860 (Abraham Lincoln becomes president)

• Although absent from the ballot in ten slave states, Abraham Lincoln is elected sixteenth president of the United States, the first Republican president in the nation who represents a party that opposes the spread of slavery in the territories of the United States.

• Lincoln's election thus served as the main catalyst of the American Civil War.

South Carolina secedes from the United States

And others follow. Theses states come together and create the Confederate States of America
