​Chronological Order

  • ​Events in a story usually go in order of time.

  • ​They take place one after the other.

​Flashback

​Sometimes, writers will stop the sequence of events, in order to visit past events.

​This is called a flashback.

​A flashback explains how the past affects the present, and gives more information about the characters.

​Foreshadowing

​Sometimes, writers will give clues or suggestions about what will happen later.

​This is called foreshadowing.

​Foreshadowing creates suspense and makes you want to keep reading, watching, or playing.

​Examples

​A veteran remembering the war he fought in 12 years ago is a flashback.

​"The doctor knew this operation would be different from the rest" is foreshadowing.
