3

The World of Matter

  • Matter: Everything around us is made up of matter, which is anything that has mass and takes up space.

  • Physical Properties: Matter has different properties, such as color, shape, size, and texture. Property of a substance that can be measured without changing chemical properties.

  • States: Matter can exist in three states: solid, liquid, and gas.

  • Composition: Matter is composed of tiny particles called atoms and molecules.

4

Multiple Choice

What are the three states in which matter can exist?

1

Color, shape, size

2

Solid, liquid, gas

3

Atoms, molecules

4

Mass, space

5

States of Matter

Solid, Liquid, Gas are the three states of matter. In solids, particles are tightly packed, while in liquids, they flow and take the shape of their container. Gases have particles that are far apart and move freely. Understanding these states helps explain the behavior of different substances.

What is matter??

Atoms are the building blocks of
matter. A combination of atoms forms a
molecule. Large groups of atoms and
molecules form the bulk matter of
day-to-day life in the physical world.
There are more than 100 different kinds
of atoms listed in the periodic table,
with each kind constituting a unique
chemical element.

41

media

What is the smallest unit

of matter?

Atoms are the smallest unit of matter.

Anatomy of an Atom

42

media
media

How do these units come together to form different

substances?

-There are many types of chemical bonds that can form, however the 3
main types are: ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds.

43

media
media

Periodic table of elements.

On the periodic table, elements are listed in order of increasing atomic
number. Elements in the same row are in the same period. This means they
have similar physical properties, such as how well they bend or conduct
electricity. Elements in the same column are in the same group.

Boiling Point

Water's Boiling point is 100 Degrees Celsius or 212 Degrees Fahrenheit

-Changes from a liquid to a gas

-Produces bubbles

-Different boiling point for each element

-Boiling point is used to identify elements

- Boiling point is highest at sea level and lowest in the mountains

-Boiling point gets lower with elevations. Less pressure makes it easier for
molecules to change phases.

200

Melting Point

-Waters Melting point is 0 Degrees Celsius or 32 Degrees Fahrenheit

-Changes from a solid to a liquid
