Monroe Doctrine
The president issued a statement on December 2, 1823: The United States would not get involved in the internal affairs or wars in Europe. It also would not interfere with any existing European colonies in the Americas. At the same time, the statement said, North America and South America "are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers."
