Poll
Before we get into the review, help us scientists gather some data!
On a scale from 1-4, how confident are you in your knowledge of the muscular system?
1
this is really hard and i'll never learn it
2
i know some of the words but its a ton of memorization
3
I've got this, i just need practice
4
Really I should be teaching the class, Ms. Elsey and Dr. Portesy have nothing on me

Categorize
Shivering
Raising hairs / goosebumps
Blood pushed out of the heart
Digestion
Blood flowing through arteries
Lymph flowing through lymphatic vessels
Jumping, running, rollerblading with your dog
Playing soccer
Scrolling on TikTok
Getting hot during a workout
Cardiac muscle contracting rhythmically
Match each scenario with the functions of the muscular system
5
Labelling
Match the types of muscle with their location in the image.
cardiac muscle

skeletal muscle
6
Match
Match the definitions with each muscle tissue type
long striated cells with multiple nuclei
spindle-shaped mononucleate fibers, not striated
striated, branching fibers that form a network to all contract at once

8
Labelling
Label the structure of a muscle!
(Hint: #2, #3, and #6 are types of connective tissue)
muscle fiber
tendon
epimysium
perimysium
blood vessel
endomysium

Organize these options into the right categories:
10
11
Labelling
Match the steps of the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction with the corresponding pictures.
ATP breaks down, stretching myosin out
Myosin heads attach to binding sites
ADP+P detaches, myosin pulls on actin
ATP binds, detaching myosin
Ca+2 enters, revealing binding sites
12
Reorder
Put the steps of the sliding filament model in order:
Calcium ions are released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, causing tropomyosin to move troponin from the binding sites
Myosin heads on the thick filament attach to the binding sites on the thin filament, forming myosin cross-bridges
Low-energy ADP+P is released from myosin heads, causing the myosin heads to spring back into place, sliding the thin filament over
A high-energy chemical, ATP binds to the exposed space on myosin heads, causing the heads to detach from actin
ATP breaks down into ADP+P, causing the myosin heads to shoot forward. This prepares the muscle for another contraction.
13
Reorder
Put the images showing the sliding filament model of muscle contraction in order:
14
Open Ended
What would happen to someones' muscles if they were unable to release calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum?
15
16
Labelling
Label the structures in myoneural junction.
motor end plate
axon terminal
axon
Ach receptor
acetylcholine
synaptic vesicle
neuromuscular junction
17
Reorder
Put the steps in a myoneural/neuromuscular junction in order:
An action potential comes from the neuron, along the axon
The synaptic vesicles in the axon terminal are triggered to release
Neurotransmitters called acetylcholine travel across the synaptic gap
Acetylcholine binds to receptors, causing Na+2 ions to diffuse into the cell
Na+2 ions cause the sarcoplasmic reticulum to release Ca+2 ions
18
Open Ended
In 3 sentences, describe the purpose of a myoneural junction.
19
20
Labelling
Label the muscles that would be used during flexion.
insertion
agonist
origin
antagonist
synergist
21
22

26
Multiple Choice
In the image, popular actress Betty White is doing a common pose called a "dab". What muscles would Mrs. White be using for this action, and what movements are shown?
She is using her biceps brachii for flexion of her left elbow and her triceps brachii for extension of her right elbow
She is using her quadriceps for adduction of her left arm and her biceps femoris for extension of her right arm
She is using her rectus abdominus for circumduction of her left shoulder and her deltoid for abduction of her right houlder
She is using her soleus for inversion of her left arm and her masseter for excursion of her right arm
27

Poll
Now that you've finished the review, help us scientists gather some final data!
On a scale from 1-4, how confident are you NOW in your knowledge of the muscular system?
1
this is still really hard and i'll never learn it :P
2
i know some of the words but its a ton of memorization...maybe I'll study before the test?
3
I've got this, I crushed those practice questions, obviously!
4
I think for sure I should be teaching the class.
