Appositive

  • A word or phrase that identifies a noun or gives extra information about a noun

  • The appositive is usually right next to the noun it is clarifying

  • Example: Emily's brother, Sam, climbed on the bus. Who is the subject of this sentence?

  • In the example, brother is the subject (noun) and the person doing something in this sentence. Sam is the appositive.

  • His friend, Tom, went on vacation. What is Tom describing?

  • The class played their favorite game during recess, which is soccer. What is giving more information about their favorite game?

  • Louisiana, one of the southern states, is known for it's boot shape. Which one of the southern states?

  • My third grade virtual teacher at LCCA, Ms. Buller, loves reading! What is describing Ms. Buller?

  • Do you know what my favorite dog is?

  • Are there hundreds of types of dogs?

  • Can we add information to this sentence to give extra details?

  • If you remove the appositive from the sentence, it will still make sense.
