Rational and Irrational Numbers Review

Algebra 1/ Intermediate Algebra

2

What is a Rational Number?

  • A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction where the denominator (bottom number) is not ZERO!

    • Repeating decimals

    • Terminating decimals

media

3

Types of RATIONAL NUMBERS

  • Natural Numbers

    • aka "counting numbers." These are the numbers that you can count (so, basically all positive whole numbers with the exception of 0).

  • Whole Numbers

    • Whole numbers are all natural numbers and 0!

  • Integers

    • Basically all positive and negative WHOLE numbers (and 0).

4

What is an irrational number?

  • An irrational number can not be written as a fraction.

    • ALL repeating decimals

    • Square roots of imperfect squares (aka- square roots that don't work out)

Operations with Rational and Irrational Numbers

  • When you're ADDING:

    • Rational+Rational = Rational

    • Rational + Irrational= Irrational

    • Irrational +Irrational= Irrational

  • When you're MULTIPLYING:

    • Rational x Rational= Rational

    • Rational x Irrational = Irrational

    • Irrational x Irrational= Irrational or Rational

Let's talk about EXPRESSIONS

An algebraic expression is a series of numbers, letters and operation signs without an = sign.

We call each part of an expression a term. Terms are separated by + and - signs inside of the expression. Terms can contain coefficients (big numbers), variables (letters), and exponents (little flying numbers).

27

More about Expressions

  • A constant is a number that does NOT have a variable.

  • The degree of an expression can be found by adding all of the UNLIKE variables' exponents.
