All grains from nature start as whole grains. Whole grain means that all the layers of the grain are there. No parts of the grain have been taken away.

Whole Grain

Once grains are harvested from the field, they are processed into flour.

The flour is then used to make different foods.
A grain is no longer whole when parts of its layers are removed in processing. It is now called a refined grain. By removing layers of the grain, food companies are also removing valuable nutrition—fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
