​ Nouns and Adjectives

NOUN- describes a person, place, thing or idea.

Common Noun- general name for a person, place, thing or idea that is NOT capitalized.

Proper Noun- is specific to a person, place, thing or idea that IS capitalized.​

  • Proper Nouns Examples underlined:

  • Julio is hilarious.

  • New York City is enormous.

  • The Tree of Life is in Bahrain.

  • Common Nouns Examples underlined:

  • The child tiptoed very cautiously.

  • The dog ran past us.

  • Kentaro remembered the bronze statue.

  • Tiny carts sold newspapers named Tokyo Press.

Pronoun Examples:​

  • Please take these papers and give it to them.

  • Janice and I live in an apartment.

  • ​Dinosaurs were very large, but they died millions of years ago.

  • ​Her friend says it's ours, but I think it belongs to them.

Pronoun-is a word that you use to refer to someone or something when you do not need to use a noun.

Personal Pronoun-​  a short word we use as a simple substitute for the proper name of a person. I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, and them are all personal pronouns.

Personal Pronoun Examples:​

  • Tom is my classmate. He is the monitor in my class.

  • Michael and I are friends. We met at school.

  • ​Tom and I are both competitive. We always race to finish tests first.

  • ​London is a great city. It is my favoutite city.

​Possessive Pronoun- shows ownership. Such as "my, mine, hers,ours, theirs."

​Demonstrative Pronoun-adjectives are this, that, these and those

  • Possessive Pronoun Examples:

  • That blue bike is hers.

  • Felix has got a robot. His robot is cool.

  • Demonstrative Pronoun-

  • I'm so excited. My father bought these toys for me.

  • This salad is made by me.

  • Can you pass me those pens?

  • That ​jar on the table over there is empty.

​Indefinite Pronouns- does not refer to any person, amount, or thing in particular, e.g. anythingsomethinganyoneeveryone, few,many, most, each, some, nothing.

Interrogative Pronouns- are who, whom, whose, what, and which

  • Indefinite Pronoun Examples:

  • The law says that everyone has to wear a seat belt.

  • He looked everywhere for the money.

  • ​Would you like to go somewhere this weekend?

  • Has anybody seen Julia today?

  • Interrogative Pronoun Examples:

​Antecedent- the word the pronoun takes place of. It is a phrase, or word, indicated by a pronoun.

  • Examples of Antecedent is underlined:

  • My sister is at the top of her class.

  • The boy smiled at his father in in the audience.

  • The plants droop when they need water.

  • When Jessica left, she slammed the door.

  • Heidi and I complete our homework together.

  • After listening to the teacher explain the directions, Jeon, Luke, and I completed the experiment ourselves.

​Adjectives-  are words that describe the qualities or states of being of nouns: enormous, doglike, silly, yellow, fun, fast.

  • The turtle is slow.

  • Red, fast, funny, old, young, smart, long

  • Two, yellow, fragile, hard, soft, bossy, lazy,

  • rude, confident, sporty, serious

​Proper Adjectives-

  1. an adjective, typically capitalized, derived from a proper noun.

  2. proper adjective describes (modifies) a noun.

  3. Many proper adjectives are formed using the names of countries (or other specific places), religions or people's names.

  • Proper adjectives are usually formed using the endings: an, ish and ese

  • Have you seen the  Portuguese coins? (capitalized and a country)

  • My mother chose Mediterranean furniture. (capitalized and country)

  • ​Our club met during Christmas vacation. (Capitalized)

  • ​An Irish leprechaun is the team mascot. (C

  • ​We decided to go a Mexican restaurant.

  • ​I can play the Chopin waltz on the piano.
