(In your notes) Try to finish these rules using when, which, that, who, whose, where:

  • We use _______or that for people.

  • We use _______ or ________ for things.

  • We use ______ for possessions (things we have or own).

  • We use ________ for places.

  • We use _________ for times.

3

Correct your rules, if necessary.

  • We use who or that for people.

  • We use which or that for things.

  • We use whose for possessions (things we have or own).

  • We use where for places.

  • We use when for times.

4

Why do you need to know this?

I always ask you to write longer sentences, so

  • There's a vending machine. It sells frozen food. (Two short sentences)

  • There's a vending machine that sells frozen food. (One decent sentence)

  • There's my neighbour. We found his dog.

  • There's my neighbour whose dog we found.

  • I want to show you the house where I was born.

5

Sometimes we can leave out that, who or which.

If who, that and which are followed by a noun or pronoun (I, you, he, she, it, we, they), we can skip that, who, which. Look at the example.
