Model Introduction

Standing up for what is right takes a plethora of dedication and determination. Booker T. Washington was a very determined and dedicated advocate for the rights of African Americans. In the essay from Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington, Washington describes the experiences he had while erecting campus buildings with the student labor, which would have challenged a man of lesser character. These experiences were filled with hardships, such as problems with the machinery and discouragement from the students and others involved. However, when facing adversity, Washington’s character traits of determination and resilience allowed him to find ways to overcome these obstacles.
