Water is a molecule with the chemical formula H2O.
The hydrogen atoms share electrons with the oxygen atom to form a covalent bond.
There are TWO TYPES of Covalent bonds which we will discuss today!
Water
4
Valence electrons do not stay between the two atoms but spend time orbiting each atom.
See the hydrogen atoms sharing electrons!
5
The bonds that hold two atoms together share electrons EQUALLY.
Nonpolar
The bonds that hold two atoms together share electrons UNEQUALLY and the ends of the atoms become positively and negatively charged.

Two Types of Covalent Bonds
6
What do you notice about the water molecule to the right?
Because water is polar, it behaves in special ways:
- sticks to other molecules
- universal solvent
- sticks to itself

Multiple Choice
What characteristic gives a water molecule its unique properties?
water contains nonpolar bonds
water is attractive to valence electrons
water contains extra electrons
water is a polar molecule
9
Categorize
Equal amount of time sharing electrons
Unequal amount of time sharing electrons
positive and negative charges on atoms form
atoms remain neutral
Match the characteristic to the type of covalent bond.
