Example Response

One major challenge a newly independent country might face is choosing between aligning with the United States or the Soviet Union during the Cold War. For example, many African and Asian nations, such as Egypt under Nasser or India under Nehru, were pressured to take sides in exchange for military or economic aid. These countries often joined the Non-Aligned Movement to avoid becoming pawns in the superpower rivalry. This challenge made it difficult for new nations to maintain true sovereignty. While seeking aid for development or defense, they risked becoming dependent on one bloc or the other, which could lead to internal division, foreign interference, or being drawn into proxy conflicts.

Why does Nehru mention Egypt and Hungary? What point is he making about world events?

Nehru brings up Egypt and Hungary to emphasize how global peace was being threatened during the Cold War. For example, he references both countries as recent tragedies that affected people around the world, showing the real human cost of foreign intervention and violent conflict. By using these examples, Nehru shows the instability caused by powerful nations interfering in the affairs of others, which supports his argument that peace and national sovereignty are critical in the modern world.

7

How does Nehru define nonalignment?

Nehru defines nonalignment as an active and independent foreign policy that avoids taking sides in military alliances. He argues that nonalignment is not passive or weak, but rather a deliberate way to deal with global problems without being controlled by larger powers. This strategy reflects India’s commitment to diplomacy over division and reinforces the belief that peace can be achieved through tolerance, not domination.

8

What message is Nehru sending to newly independent nations or world powers through this speech?

Nehru is encouraging newly independent nations to remain politically independent and resist becoming tools of larger powers. He stresses that every country should have the freedom to decide its own path and that peace depends on respecting each nation’s sovereignty. This message speaks to nations coming out of colonial rule, empowering them to stay independent in the Cold War without falling into new forms of control, whether from the U.S. or USSR.
