Major Historical Events in El Salvador

El Salvador has experienced many important historical events that have shaped the country. In 1821, El Salvador gained independence from Spain, becoming one of the first Central American nations to seek freedom. Later, in 1932, the country faced one of the deadliest uprisings in its history, known as "La Matanza," where thousands of indigenous people were killed after protesting against land inequality. The Civil War, which lasted from 1980 to 1992, was one of the longest and most violent conflicts in the region, leading to a peace agreement in 1992. More recently, in 2001, El Salvador adopted the U.S. dollar as its official currency, marking one of the biggest economic changes in the country’s history. These events have played a key role in shaping modern El Salvador.
