Spanish Armada

The Spaniards are at it again... (Remember Spanish Inqusition)

In 1588, Spain sent the Spanish Armada—a fleet of 130 ships and 27,000 men—to invade England. King Philip II aimed to restore Catholicism, stop English support for Dutch rebels, and punish Sir Francis Drake for raiding Spanish ships. The English, with fewer ships but better long-range guns, defeated the Armada in a key battle on August 8. Forced to retreat, many Spanish ships were lost in storms, and only about 60 made it back. The defeat weakened Spain’s power in Europe, saved England from invasion, and marked a turning point in naval warfare, shifting the focus to gun-armed ships.
