• describe the timbre of instruments and voices with descriptive words

• explain the relationship between sound creation and timbre

Words you should know

• Timbre: the unique sound an instrument or voice produces.

  • Synonyms: quality; tone

• Voice: a unique musical instrument that makes sound through whispering, speaking, shouting, or singing.

• Sound:  a vibration that travels through something.

• Sound Wave: the vibration of sound that travels to your ear.

More words you should know

• Instrument Family: a group of musical instruments that are related to one another.

  • String Family: instruments that produce sounds by vibrating strings. The vibration can be started by bowing, plucking, or strumming.

  • Woodwind Family: instruments with keys that produce sound by blowing into a mouthpiece

  • Brass Family: instruments with valves that produce sound by buzzing air into a mouthpiece

  • Percussion Family-instruments that are struck, shaken, or scraped to create sound

What is Timbre?

• Instruments that use the vibration of strings to produce sound by plucking or bowing or strumming. 

• Many string instruments use a bow.

• A bow is a special tool that uses horsehair to pull the strings and create vibration.

• Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass (also called String Bass), Harp

• Instruments that produce sound by blowing through a mouthpiece.

• Woodwinds were originally made of wood, but today most are plastic/resin or metal.

• Some woodwinds use reeds to produce sound. 

• Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, English Horn

Woodwind family

• Brass instruments are played by buzzing into a mouthpiece.

• Brass is a special type of metal called an alloy which combines copper and zinc.

• Pitches are changed by used valves or slides that change the air flow through the tubing.

• Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Brass Family

Instruments that are struck, shaken, or scraped to create sound.

Almost anything can be a percussion instrument.

Percussion instruments can be placed in two categories:

Non-Pitched

Drums

Cymbals

Maracas

 

Pitched

Piano

Xylophone

Marimba

Glockenspiel
