A chemical process that enables organisms to convert food into energy.
Plants take glucose (sugar), and cellular respiration turns it into ATP (form of energy)
Cellular Respiration
Trees and other plants make food by photosynthesis. Green plants use their leaves to collect the sunlight and carbon dioxide from the air. They combined this with water taken in by the plant’s roots. The result is sugar. This sugar gives the plant the energy it needs to grow. During photosynthesis plants release oxygen into the air for us to breathe.

Sequoia Trees
These trees obtain energy through the process of photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, light energy, radiant energy, is converted to stored energy by converting water and carbon dioxide into glucose. Carbon dioxide is obtained from the surrounding air, and water is obtained using their root system. When the trees are ready to use this energy, they complete cellular respiration. During cellular respiration, glucose is converted to a usable form of energy known as ATP. To do this, these plants use the glucose from photosynthesis and oxygen from the air.

How do giant sequoia trees acquire the energy they need to grow so large?
15
Think, Pair, Share
Think of these questions:
Do trees need energy in order to grow? If so, where does that energy come from?
Do all living things obtain the matter and energy they need to live and grow in the same way?
