  • A simple sentence contains a subject and at least one verb. (An independent clause or a subject plus a compound predicate).

Example: I ran. (independent clause = a subject plus a verb)

I ran and jumped. (subject plus a compound predicate)

  • HINT: Compound means two or more elements. Therefore, a compound predicate is simply one subject followed by two verbs.

  • A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses.

  • A complex sentence has one independent clause plus one or more dependent clauses

    • Dependent clauses BEFORE an independent have a comma between the clauses

    • Dependent Clauses AFTER an independent clause may or may not have a comma

    • You can also split the ind. clause: ind. clause part 1, dependent clause, ind. clause part 2 EX: My dog, who loves treats, will do all kinds of tricks.

  • A compound-complex sentence has a compound sentence (2 or more independent clauses) plus one or more dependent clauses.

So basically, sentences are a type of math equation!
