Biology - Part 2

By Mr. Tomlinson

2

Photosynthesis / Cellular Respiration

  • Photosynthesis- plants make their own food in the chloroplast.  Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2), sunlight, & water (H2O) and produce glucose (C6H12O6) and oxygen (O2)

media

3

Multiple Choice

What do plants need to perform photosynthesis?

1

Soil and Water

2

Sunlight and Carbon Dioxide

3

Water and Sunlight

4

Oxygen and Sunlight

4

Multiple Choice

What is a product (what comes out) of photosynthesis?

1

Carbon Dioxide

2

Water

3

Sunlight

4

Oxygen

5

Photosynthesis / Cellular Respiration

  • Cellular Respiration- When an organism takes in glucose (food) and it is broken down to be used as energy (ATP) for the body.

media

6

Photosynthesis / Cellular Respiration

  • Your Digestive system breaks down food into small molecules called glucose (reactant).  Your respiratory system brings in O2 (reactants) and  releases CO2 (product).  Your circulatory system then takes the nutrients all around the body so all cells can perform cellular respiration (making energy [ATP] from food) in the mitochondria

media

7

Photosynthesis / Cellular Respiration

  • Carbohydrates- breads, pastas- provide your body with the MOST usable form of energy

  • Simple carbohydrates- provides your body with short lasting amounts of energy  Ex- fruits, vegetables, candy

  • Complex carbohydrates- provides your body with long lasting amounts of energy Ex- breads & pasta

media

8

Photosynthesis / Cellular Respiration

  • Protein- meat, beans, fish, chicken, eggs, nuts- builds and repairs muscle tissues.

  • Lipids- a second source of energy

  • Exercise allows your body to bring in more oxygen to break food down faster.

  • Metabolism turns your food into energy

media

9

Multiple Choice

What kind of diet is the most important for us to be healthy?

1

A high protein diet

2

A high carbohydrate diet

3

A balanced diet

4

A diet with only vegetables

10

Limiting Factors

  • Biotic factors= living (animals, plants, etc); Abiotic factors= non-living (sun, water, oxygen, etc)

  • Limiting Factor- Biotic and Abiotic factors that slow/ stop a population's ability to grow.

  • We can carry out investigations to determine limiting factors.

media

11

Multiple Choice

What are two abiotic parts of an ecosystem?

1

Water and Air

2

Water and animals

3

Sunlight and Bacteria

4

Animals and Fungi

12

Multiple Choice

What are two biotic parts of an ecosystem?

1

Bacteria and Fungi

2

Viruses and Sunlight

3

Animals and Water

4

Plants and soil

13

Limiting Factors

  • Independent variable- what changes during the investigation.

  • Dependent variable- what is being measured in an investigation.

  • Constant (Controlled) variable- what stays the same throughout an investigation.

media

14

Relationships

  • Niche= your role; Habitat= where you live

  • Autotroph/producer= makes its own food from sun

  • Heterotroph/consumer= has to eat other things for energy

  • Decomposer= breaks down dead & decaying organisms (bacteria; mushrooms)

18

Relationships

  • 90% of energy is used at each level as you move up the energy pyramid.  Only 10% travels up.

20

Energy / Matter Flow

  • Carbon Cycle- goes to atmosphere through humans cellular respiration, decomposition, fossil fuels; carbon leaves atmosphere through plants (photosynthesis)
