6

Climates are Important!

Earth has many different climate regions- all of these climates allow unique organisms to survive. As global temperatures change, many of these areas & the things that have evolved & adapted to live there are threatened.

7

The avgerage weather conditions in an area over time

EX:
*
Pennsylvania is a temperate climate
*Most of Alaska is a polar climate

The condition of the atmosphere at a given time & location.

EX:
*
Sunny & 70 in Pennsylvania
*Snowing and -10 in Alaska

The average temperature of the North Pole in the winter is -40 °C, and 32 °C in the summer. What do you think could happen if those temperatures increased by 20 degrees?

9

Greenhouse Effect

Earth's atmosphere functions similarly to a greenhouse.

The Earth's atmosphere, like the glass/plastic structure of the greenhouse, traps heat.

As the energy from the sun reaches the Earth, much of it is reflected back into space, and some is trapped by our atmosphere. This allows Earth to stay at a range that supports life.

A

B

C

D

A - Some heat gets trapped, which allows the Earth to be survivable at night when there is no energy from the sun.

B- Some energy is reflected & trapped in the atmosphere & absorbed by the greenhouse gases, insulating the planet.

C- Solar radiation passes through the atmosphere.

D- The Earth's surface reflects some solar radiation.

12

Multiple Choice

Which of the following statements best describes the greenhouse effect?

1

sunlight reflects directly off the Earth's surface and back into space

2

volcanic eruptions release large amounts of heat and gases, warming the planet

3

the Earth's magnetic field attracts solar energy, heating the core

4

certain gases in the atmosphere trap outgoing heat radiation from the Earth

13

Temp Changes- Natural

Volcanic Eruption- As eruptions occur, carbon dioxide and water vapor are released into the atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect.

Solar Radiation- Sometimes, the sun is more active, which affects the amount of radiation it gives off. This can affect global temperatures.

14

Temp Changes- Natural

Tectonic Shifts- As tectonic plates move, landmasses can end up in new locations, changing the climate of that area. The closer a continent is to the equator, the warmer the climate.

Changes in Orbit- The shape of Earth's orbit (100,000-year cycles), the tilt of the Earth (41,000-year cycles), and the Earth's axis of rotation (26,000-year cycles) can all change, causing climate shifts.

15

Multiple Select

Which gases are released in volcanic eruptions that contribute to global climate changes? Select all that apply.

1

Oxygen

2

Water Vapor

3

Nitrogen

4

Carbon Dioxide

16

17

Temp Changes- Natural

Research shows that these climate changes due to natural causes are relatively short-term, and the average climate conditions have stayed generally consistent for billions of years.

The graph shows the average global temperature since human populations began to significantly increase.

What is one thin you notice/a question you have about this graph?

19

Temp Changes- Human

Industrialization led to a significant increase in the use of FF.

Burning FF produces carbon dioxide, which is a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect.

20

Multiple Choice

Question image

Which IF...THEN statement can be accurately used to describe the graph?

1

IF the CO2 increases, THEN the global temperature decreases.

2

IF the CO2 increases, THEN the global temperature increases.

3

IF the CO2 decreases, then THEN global temperature increases.

4

IF the CO2 increases, THEN there is no change in the global temperature.
