Climate Change Reflection

By Katherine Hewick

10.7

3

  • climate change

  • global warming

  • greenhouse effect

  • greenhouse gas

Prerequisite Vocab

Learners Can...

  • describe strategies used to reduce global warming.

  • explain how humans can prepare for the climate changes as a result of global warming.

4

Match

Match the following vocab term to the definition

climate change

global warming

greenhouse gas

greenhouse effect

long-term change in the weather pattern

increase in Earth's overall temp

gas that traps the sun's energy

the trapping of the sun's energy in atmo

5

Multiple Choice

As the amount of greenhouse gases increase in the atmosphere, what happens to the Earth's global temp?

1

It increases

2

It decreases

3

There is no change

6

Change

True change will not happen until there is a large-scale solution with the cooperation of nations across the planet.

7

Data

  • For nearly 200 years, scientists have been measuring weather conditions to track climate change.

  • Historical climate data has been collected from:

    • growth rings on trees

    • drilled ice cores

    • sediment from ocean and water beds (varves)

8

9

Multiple Choice

Which of the following trends has been observed in the glaciers found in Glacier National Park?

1

Glaciers have changed very little over the past one hundred years.

2

Glaciers change size sporadically unrelated to global temperature changes.

3

Glaciers have been melting in response to warmer temperatures.

4

Glaciers have been expanding due to a decrease in global temperatures.

10

Limit Future Warming

  • Many scientists feel as though global warming is irreversible. However, there are widely accepted strategies that can help reduce the future impacts of global warming.

    They are:

    • Fuel conservation- reduces the amount of CO2 added into the atmosphere.

    • Reforestation- increased vegetation helps reduce CO2 levels.

11

Categorize

Options (6)

using public transportation

driving fuel-efficient vehicles

working from home

planting trees

protecting old-growth forests

sustainable forest management practices

Determine whether the statements represent activities related to fuel conservation practices or reforestation practices.

There are 3 answers for each.

fuel conservation
reforestation

12

Adapting to Climate Change

  • Protective structures- rising sea levels and increased tropical storms require cities to build protective structures like seawalls, bulkheads, and hurricane resistant housing.

  • Restrict building- wetlands provide act as a buffer between the land and the sea. Limiting the development of this land helps protect costal cities.

  • Agricultural changes- with the warmer climate, farmers are moving to warm-weather crops. They are also experimenting with hybrid and GMO crops that can better tolerate a warmer climate.

13

14

Multiple Choice

Sea levels are rising globally due to climate change. Which adaptation strategy would be the most effective long-term solution for coastal communities?

1

relocating all settlements further inland

2

restoring coastal wetlands
to act as natural buffers

3

building higher seawalls
to defend against all flooding

4

investing in desalination plants to ensure freshwater supply

15

Global Initiatives

  • 2005 Kyoto Protocol:

    • The Kyoto Protocol restricts the emissions of certain greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.

    • Nations need to reduce their emissions below an established level.

    • The US refused to join, and Canada left after a short time.

    2016 Paris Agreement:

    • Designed to address global warming by monitoring and limiting global temperature rise.

    • Nearly 200 nations joined.

    • The US joined in 2016, withdrew in 2020, rejoined in 2021, an withdrew again in 2025

16

Multiple Select

Which of the following statements represent benefits to global collaboration?

Select all THREE answers that apply.

1

Working together allows for faster and more effective emission reduction strategies.

2

Sharing knowledge and resources makes solving the problem more affordable for everyone.

3

Only developed countries benefit from international climate action initiatives.

4

Cooperation fosters innovation and the development of cleaner technologies for all nations.
