Spanish:
El alfabeto

By Maddie Gomez

media

23

media

The Spanish alphabet is made up of consonants and vowels and is very similar to the English alphabet; However, there is one letter that English does not have.

Did you spot it in the list?

media

24

The Spanish alphabet, with 27 letters, is the same as the English alphabet with the addition of the ñ.

Although English does not have the letter ñ, there are English words that have the sound, like “canyon” and “onion.”

media

25

media

The Spanish Alphabet has 27 letters... but once had 30.

There used to be some pairs of letters that were considered letters, but have been removed.

26

rr, ch , and ll?

Although they still have distinct pronunciations in Spanish, the letters rr, ch and ll were removed from the Spanish alphabet by the Royal Spanish Academy in 2010.

They are called digraphs. A digraph is a combination of two letters that make one sound.

rr = rolling r ch = "ch" in cheese ll = "y" in yes

27

Sólo las vocales llevan acento (á, é, í, ó, ú)

Only vowels have accents (á, é, í, ó, ú)

29

Cosas para saber: Things to Know

- 27 letters, used to be 30
- old "letters" were rr, ll, and ch
- only vowels have accent marks

- vowels are a, e, i, o, u
- k and w are foreign letters- not in any native Spanish words
- all vowels sound different from English
- some consonants make the same sound as in English, some do not
- the line on top of ñ is called a tilde
- the only silent letter is "h"
- like in English, some consonants make different sounds depending on which vowel follows them (like Cat and Circle in English)
