Passage C
Pumpkins belong to the squash family. Like other kinds of squash, they are native to North America. Pumpkins are round with smooth, slightly ribbed skin, and coloring that ranges from orange to white to bluish-grey. Generally, pumpkins weigh between 6 and 18 pounds, although the largest reach weights of over 75 pounds. They are most commonly grown for use in foods such as pumpkin pie, pumpkin puree, and pumpkin soup. Pumpkin pie is a traditional Thanksgiving dessert; about 50 million pumpkin pies are sold on Thanksgiving each year. Another common use of pumpkins is for recreation such as carving jack-o’-lanterns. Pumpkin carving is an Irish tradition that was brought to America hundreds of years ago. The Irish carved turnips or potatoes in Ireland, but when they arrived in America, they began carving pumpkins. Today, about 50% of Americans enjoy pumpkin carving.
